The OpenAI Software Applications acquisition marks a major move in expanding OpenAI’s reach into Apple’s Mac ecosystem. OpenAI announced that it has acquired Software Applications Inc., the developer of Sky- an AI-based natural language interface for Mac computers.
Sky is an upcoming AI assistant designed to integrate directly with macOS. Similar to AI browsers, it can view users’ screens, understand what they’re doing, and assist with tasks such as writing, coding, planning, and organizing projects. The goal, according to Software Applications co-founder and CEO Ari Weinstein, is to make computing more intuitive. “With LLMs, we can finally put the pieces together,” he said. “That’s why we built Sky, an AI experience that floats over your desktop to help you think and create.”
Sky to Enhance ChatGPT’s Integration with macOS
Through the OpenAI Software Applications acquisition, the company plans to embed Sky’s technology into ChatGPT, enabling it to perform intelligent actions directly on Mac devices. OpenAI will also bring the entire Software Applications team on board to enhance this integration.
Sky’s design resembles OpenAI’s newly launched ChatGPT-powered browser Atlas, built specifically for Mac. By merging these innovations, OpenAI could transform ChatGPT into an AI agent for macOS, capable of automating everyday tasks and simplifying workflows for users.
Apple Roots Behind Software Applications
The OpenAI Software Applications acquisition brings together leaders with deep Apple experience. Weinstein and co-founder Conrad Kramer previously built Workflow Inc., which Apple acquired in 2017. Their product later evolved into the popular Shortcuts app. Another co-founder, Kim Beverett, worked at Apple for nearly a decade on projects such as Safari, Messages, FaceTime, and Mail.
Strengthening the Apple–OpenAI Connection
Industry observers believe the OpenAI Software Applications acquisition could strengthen ties between OpenAI and Apple, especially as Apple looks to enhance Siri with AI-driven capabilities. Reports suggest Apple plans to integrate ChatGPT into Siri for more advanced conversational functions.
While OpenAI has not disclosed the financial terms, Software Applications had raised just $6.5 million from investors, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Figma CEO Dylan Field.
