Apple has officially unveiled the new Apple Vision Pro M5 headset, an upgraded version of its high-end AR/VR device, promising improved performance, smoother visuals, and enhanced AI capabilities. Despite its steep price tag of $3,499, Apple continues to brand the Vision Pro as “the ultimate entertainment device,” delivering an immersive viewing experience that can simulate a 100-foot-wide screen.

When Apple launched the Vision Pro last year, it touted the headset as a game-changer in spatial computing—essentially a home theater that fits on your face. However, at $3,500, the device struggled to find mass-market success, with limited sales compared to more affordable competitors like the $500 Meta Quest 3.

Now, with the Apple Vision Pro M5 headset, the company is doubling down on its vision of immersive entertainment and advanced computing. The M5 processor “delivers a leap forward in performance,” Apple said, offering faster rendering, extended battery life, and better AI-powered workflows.

A leap in AI and display performance

The Apple Vision Pro M5 headset introduces significant improvements to visual clarity and responsiveness. Thanks to the M5 chip, users can enjoy a refresh rate of up to 120Hz for smoother motion and reduced blur. The 16-core Neural Engine enhances AI-driven tasks—like transforming 2D photos into spatial scenes—by up to 50% faster for Apple’s native apps and up to 100% faster for third-party apps.

The headset now supports up to 3 hours of video playback and features a refined dual-knit band for added comfort during long viewing sessions. Apple’s new visionOS 26 update also introduces exciting additions such as spatial widgets, customizable Personas, an interactive Jupiter environment, and multilingual Apple Intelligence features.

Immersive entertainment and exclusive content

Apple continues to expand entertainment options on the Vision Pro platform. The new model supports apps from Disney+, HBO Max, and Paramount+, though Netflix and YouTube remain unavailable. Apple TV offers a growing library of 3D movies like Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, and Wicked.

Sports fans will soon get a new experience: select live NBA games in Apple’s Immersive format, beginning with L.A. Lakers broadcasts later this season. Additional content from CNN, BBC, Audi, and Red Bull is also in the pipeline, further positioning the Vision Pro as a high-end media hub.

Growing use in business and education

While consumers remain cautious, business users are finding innovative ways to apply the Apple Vision Pro M5 headset. Apple highlighted companies like CAE, which uses the headset for pilot training simulations, and Porsche, which offers customers virtual car customization experiences. In healthcare, Visage Imaging’s 3D medical app helps hospitals such as UC San Diego Health visualize complex scans in real time.

The future of Apple’s spatial computing

According to Bloomberg, Apple has delayed plans for a lighter, cheaper version of the headset—originally slated for 2027—to focus on developing AI-powered smart glasses to compete with Meta.

For now, the Apple Vision Pro M5 headset remains Apple’s flagship device in the AR/VR market, showcasing the company’s ambition to merge entertainment, AI, and immersive experiences into one powerful platform. Whether it becomes a mainstream success or stays a premium niche product remains to be seen.
