Altron HealthTech on Wednesday announced the pilot launch of ThriveLink oncology app, marking a major milestone in South Africa’s digital health landscape. The app is the country’s first comprehensive oncology companion platform designed to connect patients, doctors, caregivers, and medical schemes in one seamless digital ecosystem.
The ThriveLink oncology app aims to support cancer patients through improved care coordination, access to reliable information, and reduced administrative burdens. Built with empathy and innovation, the app provides appointment tracking, medication reminders, and secure communication tools that allow patients to manage their treatment journey efficiently.
A Response to Rising Cancer Cases in South Africa
Leslie Moodley, Managing Director at Altron HealthTech, said the company was inspired to develop ThriveLink after noticing an alarming rise in cancer diagnoses. According to data from the SA Journal of Oncology, cancer cases in South Africa are expected to nearly double from 62,000 in 2019 to 121,000 by 2030.
“We’ve built this tool with the ultimate goal of making life easier for cancer patients,” Moodley said. “Through the ThriveLink oncology app, patients can take control of their treatment journey, communicate directly with their care team, and access educational and emotional support resources. It’s about empowering them to focus on what matters most — their health and wellbeing.”
Building a Connected Digital Healthcare Ecosystem
Altron HealthTech, known for its pioneering work in digital healthcare and corporate wellness solutions, designed the app after extensive consultations with oncologists, patients, and healthcare professionals. A base version was rolled out to specialists about a year ago, and insights from that pilot were used to refine the now-expanded platform ready for broader testing.
Moodley explained that the ThriveLink oncology app bridges gaps across the healthcare value chain by integrating data from specialists, pharmacies, and medical schemes. “Our aim was to build a technology-driven solution that coordinates care efficiently, streamlines authorisations, and enables real-time interoperability,” he said. “This means oncologists can adapt treatment plans based on patient outcomes while patients receive timely reminders and updates.”
Security, Privacy, and Compliance at Its Core
Built on secure, cloud-based software-as-a-service architecture, the app complies with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and all other relevant health data regulations. Patients must provide informed consent before using the service, ensuring their personal and medical data remain protected.
Beyond improving patient outcomes, Altron HealthTech believes the ThriveLink oncology app will play a key role in controlling healthcare costs. Cancer remains one of the most expensive diseases to treat, with the Cancer Alliance projecting that it could add R50 billion to South Africa’s public healthcare burden by 2030.
Reducing Costs and Empowering the Healthcare System
“By streamlining processes and integrating claims, authorisations, and clinical data, we’re reducing duplication and administrative costs,” Moodley added. “This can indirectly help control medical aid premiums and make care more affordable for patients.”
The company is now in early discussions with several medical aid schemes about integrating ThriveLink into their mobile platforms, signaling strong interest in this groundbreaking innovation.
With its patient-first approach and data-driven design, ThriveLink oncology app could become a model for future health-tech solutions across Africa — marking a step toward a more connected, compassionate, and cost-effective healthcare system.
